When I was a senior in high school I saved my money up and took a class at night at NYU School of Continuing Education. I wanted to become a film director. One night I was sitting out front of one of the NYU buildings facing Washington Squre park. This kid came riding down the middle of he street on a skateboard. He snapped 3 ft off the ground trying to do a trick, and fell down. A taxi pulled up behind him and stopped short. The kid got up faced the cab and started slamming his skateboard on the hood of the cab flipping out on the cab driver screaming at him. He got back on his board and road off. A year later I had come up with an idea to make an indy skate video with my bootleg ass vhs-c video camera I got as a graduation gift. I started telling everyone about my idea. I was over at the friend of a friend's house one night and told her about my idea. She said to me, "You should shoot Harold." I was like,"Harold...who's that?" She showed me a picture she had. I was like yo I know this kid! He was the same kid I saw fall down in the street. His face was hard to forget. She eventually introduced me to him over that cube. I told him about my idea. He said to me ok, gave me his pager number, I hit em up. He was like meet me at Supreme tommorow. This was about a month or two before Kids dropped. I would meet up with him and ride around with him and shoot him. There were a lot kids around at that time. I can't remember most of their names. But the ones I do remember are Justin, Hamilton, John Carter, Crazy Ive, then there was a Swedish kid who Harold used to hang with too regularly. And Eliana was around back then too. That was my homegirl before her crazy Greek mom finally sent her ass off to some boarding school. Rodney Torres, Quim. Joey was around bakc then too he and Harold used to stay in the streets beefing with one another. Carter's skate style was so smooth flying off curbs at Astor busting fat ollies and 180s he used to skate so fast and bust so high. Hamilton wouldn't talk to you if you weren't real. Rodney was super friendly. Most of the kids were real frienldy back then. There was one Japanese kid who used to always hang out and skate Astor Place that couldn't speak no English but everyone liked him cause he stayed in the street. Harold would go on about Zoo York. They had just come out recently. He was starting to ride with them but they wanted him to sign a contract but he didn't want to do it. At this time Chloe Savigny was working in Liquid Sky. The first clothing store on Lafayette Avenue that broke the block in.
I stayed following Harold around with my video camera trying to find other kids to shoot. Other niggaz was like, "Yo son you got a fisheye lens.....Na? Ah forget it then you can't shoot me." I got my fishe eye up and then niggaz was like "Is that a hi-8 camera? Na? Ah then you can't shoot me." Harold didn't give a f**k.
I saw life shift for him when the movie Kids came out. I was riding around with him here and there and we would be going down the block and everyone was like, "Hey aren't you that kid from Kids? Hey that's that guy from the movie. And Harold was tapping everything in site. People used to give him a lot of nuts about how funny he looked and now all of a sudden he was famous. I remember going back to his place one time with him and him talking to his big brother Ron. He was like, "Ron you remember them girls over on West 8th Street that used to call me froggy? Yeah now all of them wanna suck my froggy thingy!"
I remember when I first started hanging out with him someone else had died. I never met the kid. There was a skate shop called Benji's that was near the Brooklyn Banks. This kid had grown up in that skate shop. The owner had treated him like he was his son. He had gotten hit by a taxi cab and was killed and it had f**ked everyone's heads up. Anyone that was really old school knew about Benji's. It was perhaps the predecessor to Supreme. But it was around before when I started skating in Manhattan.
(this is getting long so I will post another thread later
