As a kid growing up in the neighborhood it was a very different place than what it became. No one with money wanted to be here unless they were buying, everyone knew each other (atleast by face or crew), most of the dealers on the block were cool peeps just struggling to make a buck, the homeless took over Tompkins and set up their own city, and us kids just hung out at Mike's candy shop drinking 25 cent drinks playing video games or in Tompkins playing ball and just hanging.
one year they put on a skateboarding comp. in the park and we were all there and that's were I first meet Harold. He was just a f**kin' amazing skater, cool kid, and someone who everyone wanted to hang with. I started skating at the park with him for awhile... It was a fun time.
after some time we would just see each other around the way and just give eachother the usual nod... anyway, a couple a years later I was walking up my block and two kids come up behind me and start talking nuts to me about wanting my watch or some nuts. I turned around a saw Harold standing there with some dopey white kid that was like 4 feet tall... I just started to laugh and Harold said "what the f**k are you laughing at". I said.."Harold, what the f**k are you doin', we used to skate together, it's me Jon". he stared at me harder and was like, "yo, what's man(giving me a pound), my bad, see you around." It was the funniest nuts in the world to me...
anyway, Harold was a special cat, you always knew there was something different about him. Every time when I thought back to how things were and wondered where people went with their lives, I always thought about him and wondered what else he was up too and if I was gonna see him around or in some new movie. It's sad to hear the news about him...I feel like a part of my childhood as past with him... RIP Harold... and I send my condolences to Ronald, Mike, and his sister.
